FACT

8 times more young people die from solvent abuse than from illegal drugs.

In 1995 the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) reported that, ‘VSA is, for certain ages, a bigger killer than leukemia, pneumonia and drowning combined, and that, for certain ages, it constitutes a significant proportion of all deaths'.

In August 2009 the People’s Postcode Lottery awarded LOST with £5,000. This sum will be used to help achieve LOST’s aims and objectives including educating the community of Fife about the dangers of solvent abuse by giving out information to parents, institutions and any other suitable venues.

On 29th October LOST held their Annual General Meeting for 2009. It was very well received and members from various organisations arrived to attend. These included individuals from the Fife Council, Fife NHS, the Adam Smith College, Re-Solv, Drug and Alcohol Project Limited (DAPL), the Scottish Drug Forum, Fife Intensive Rehabilitation & Substance Misuse Team (FIRST), Community Learning and Development, Council for Voluntary Service Fife (CVS Fife), VONAF, Starley Hall, Fife Addiction Services, Buckhaven High School and Fife Police.

Guest speakers at the event included Marina Clayton and Jai Jardin from Re-Solv, Ryan Smart from LOST and Sean McCollum from the Scottish Drugs Forum. The members of Re-Solv talked about the rise in the number of VSA deaths and details of the Road to Recovery scheme to help solvent abusers. Ryan Smart voiced his opinions on the current way that high school pupils are taught about the harmful effects of drug and solvent abuse and how it could be improved. Sean McCollum announced that he recently joined the Alcohol Drug Partnership (ADP), and that he would raise the issue of VSA at their next meeting whilst also trying to include VSA prevention methods in their actions.
